Intensive English Program

The SLA Intensive English Program will help you improve your English skills quickly. It is ideal for students who are preparing for university study in the USA, for professionals and other adult learners. Our communicative approach to language learning makes for lively, interactive classes.

The Intensive English Program provides:

• 20 hours of classroom instruction per week
• 6 levels
  
• Technology-supported learning to complement classroom instruction and give individualized practice
  
• Opportunities to meet and speak with Americans, visit local businesses, hear guest speakers and explore the city
  
• Experiential language learning with ESL Adventures, an extracurricular program where students build English skills while participating in activities such as sailing and salsa dancing
  
• College counseling service for students planning to attend a U.S. university
  
• Optional special-interest courses in pronunciation, business English, test prep

Classes and Levels:
Classes at SLA are small and highly interactive. The core language skills of structure, listening, speaking, reading and writing are taught using the communicative approach. Lessons on vocabulary building, pronunciation, culture and current events allow students to expand their knowledge base. The classroom setting provides students with ample opportunities to practice and integrate the material they are studying; outings provide opportunities for students to use the English they are learning in real-life situations.

Level 1 – Beginner (some background required)

Level 4 – High Intermediate           
Level 5 – Advanced
Level 6 – College Link

College Link is an 8-week course in which students prepare for exams such as the TOEFL®iBT and IELTS® and practice skills necessary to succeed in a U.S. college setting: listening to lectures, taking notes, reading college-level texts, writing papers.

Evening Classes

Practical Communication

The focus of these classes is on improving your ability to communicate effectively in English in social and workplace conversation as well as written correspondence. Lessons appropriate to your level will concentrate on accent reduction, listening skills, speaking, vocabulary-building, grammar and writing. Both textbook and authentic materials, such as recordings of situation-based dialogues, readings, film clips and radio broadcasts will be used. These are active classes, with lots of opportunity to practice and interact with the instructor.

Test Prep

We offer test prep classes for three of the world’s major exams recognized by universities and institutions worldwide. The IELTS® and the TOEFL® iBT measure a student’s ability in the English language. While the first has both general and academic modules, the second is strictly academic. The TOEIC® measures communication skills for business. Our courses focus on training in test-taking strategies. Please check current offerings.

Placement exams
New students complete a written placement test before they arrive at SLA. Please note: should students place into a level in which there are no other students, Seattle Language Academy reserves the right to assign them to the class nearest their level.
